On becoming a model
After one year of college at Northwestern, I realized I couldn't keep dividing my energies. I knew I had to make a choice and, well, modeling won out.
Today, international supermodel icon Cindy Crawford is best known as being the gorgeous wife of businessman Rande Gerber and mom to supermodel princess on the rise daughter Kaia Jordan Gerber, but we’d like to revisit her very storied career and her special history with Playboy.

Cindy Crawford graced Playboy’s cover not once, but twice – in July 1988 and October 1998. During the ‘80s and ‘90s, Crawford and her signature mole, was among the most popular supermodels and a ubiquitous presence on magazine covers (in addition to Playboy, Crawford was a regular mainstay of covers like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, People, W, Allure, Cosmopolitan. Cindy was also the queen of runway strutting down numerous catwalks including forChanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, DKNY, Valentino, Ralph Lauren and Versace.

Crawford was also the stunning face of such global brands as Pepsi, Omega, Clairol and Maybelline. There’s Crawford has consistently ranked high on lists of the world's sexiest people and was ranked number five on Playboy's list of the 100 sexiest stars of the 20th century.

But it was when fellow model and runway Barbie Paulina Porizkova appeared on the pages and the cover of the August 1987 issue of Playboy that Cindy herself became a fan. "I was suddenly buying Playboy to see Paulina," she says, laughing, "But I never imagined that I'd actually do a layout in it one day. But then I saw what Herb Ritts did with Brigitte Nielsen in the December issue. And I thought, wow, if he can make her look that good, I'd love to see what he could do with me. That's when I decided to go for it."

When asked about how society tends to value looks, Crawford tells Playboy, “That’s not something about our culture that I respect. I don’t disrespect myself for succeeding that way. I don’t think commercial is a bad word. My look was right for the eighties. I was smart enough to seize the opportunity and create others.”

The opportunities Crawford has been afforded from her career in beauty are akin to roses blossoming on a bush. Like her husband, Cindy is now an established businesswoman who has launched a line of beauty products with Jean-Louis Sebagh called Meaningful Beauty, a furniture line with Raymour & Flanigan plus a furniture line under her signature Cindy Crawford Home Collection, and a home goods line with J. C. Penney.

Crawford says that her transition from modeling into the brand realm was an easy catwalk. “In the past they bought [magazines I was featured on] because they liked my look, then people bought magazines because they were my fans,” she says. “Now people feel I’m trustworthy, so products I have represent have credibility.” It’s not just her products, Cindy Crawford is the undeniably the real deal; the ultimate complete package of credibility, beauty and brains to match.
