At Monday night’s Met Gala the theme was “Notes on Camp”. While journalists on the red carpet were fixated on getting the celebrity take on the definition of "camp", we are sure Vogue's Anna Wintour described it best when she defined it quite simply as "fun". Sure, this was the most amusing, endearing red carpet we've seen since the annual event's first go in 1948, but something else—something bigger—was happening. Whether or not it was with the theme in mind, the world's most famous men traded the usual play on the tux for some real risk taking. In fact, the night might end up proving the beginnings of a new era of men's fashion, one where the gender lines have totally and completely blurred.
The same could be said of actor Ezra Miller (someone who proudly identifies as gender fluid), who wore a jewel-corseted Burberry suit who accessorized with a mask on a stick—matched by an optical-illusion painted over his face, a deep red lip and a black old Hollywood-inspired wig. This is somewhat par for the course for the actor who showed up to the Paris premiere of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald in a floor-length puffer coat courtesy of Moncler x Pierpaolo Piccioli.

There was Michael Urie, who walked the carpet in Camp perfection, wearing a pink tutu on his right half beneath a half-tattooed upper body and half-unshaven face; on his other side he wore a suit accompanied by a bold red lip, an earring and a clutch. He finished the look with a combat boot beneath the tulle skirt and a heel under the leg of the trouser. And then of course there was RuPaul’s Drag Race winners Aquaria and Violet Chachki (Chachki identifies as gender nonconforming), who showed the beauty of drag aesthetics
That’s far from it. Jared Leto opted for a red silk, jewel-encrusted gown from Gucci. Cole Sprouse, a man best known for brooding and breaking the law on The CW, opted for a tomato yellow suit with flowers in black, creme, orange and lavender ornately decorated throughout. Lewis Hamilton the showed out in a black and silver zig-zag suit. For his first-ever Met Gala, Dapper Dan wore a custom Gucci suit adorned with blue flowers. Henry Golding killed it in a purple and blue ombre sequined Versace suit. Meanwhile, Nick Jonas looked dapper in a white Dior Men tux with sparkly silver Christian Louboutin shoes.
All in all it was quite an exciting night to see so many people on every spectrum of gendered expression having fun with subverting the usual arbitrary assignments so often made to clothing. In fact, that very rejection, and the manipulation of it, is the essence of Camp. Bravo guys, now let’s keep the gender deviant wardrobes going not just on the red carpet. But for a singular event, credit where credit is due: you all really showed out.
